Birds blamed for the closure of poular windsurfing location Porirua Pauatahanui in NZ – from Stuff.co.nz The popular inner harbour waterway north of Wellington was closed recently because of increased levels of enterococci bacteria which can cause stomach upsets believed to be the result of bird droppings. Porirua City Council spokesman Roger Foley said the increased bacteria levels were found in the water after routine testing. Mr Foley said the cause of the contamination was not entirely clear but it was believed to be from droppings from a variety of native sea birds nesting in the area. He said the inlet was a very quiet water, popular with people learning to windsurf. There have been no reported cases of people being infected after using the waterway, Mr Foley said. Pauatahanui inlet was last closed late last summer for a few days, he said. "It normally flushes out within two or three days. We don't anticipate this state existing for very much longer. . .we err on the side of caution with these things." Waters on the western side of SH1, Titahi Bay, Plimmerton and Mana, have not been affected, Mr Foley said.
