Watergrove Reservoir is in Wardle, Rochdale. To get there drive up through Wardle village then follo w a cobbled road up to the reservoir. Access is only possible if there is a member present as the gate is locked otherwise to comply with water regulations. The lake can be sailed in any direction but is best in SW to NW and NE. The lake is quite high up so gets decent wind for an inland venue. West Pennine Sailboard Club have exclusive use of the lake so no Jetskis, Dinghys etc. There is fishing but only shore based. Non-members can purchase day tickets to sail. This is only possible if there are members sailing so best to phone first. There is a car park, changing facilities and a grassy rigging area. It's a small friendly club and welcomes sailors of all abilities. More info on the WPSC website

20/09/06 Sailed today S/SW Force5 gusting 6. Absolutely fantastic. Clean water and plenty of it. In this direction you can sail 'end to end'. There is a deep water channel to the west of the lake which made for choppy conditions. This place really is the best kept secret inland in the North West. To say it is so close to Rochdale/Manchester, you really could be miles from civilisation. Today I saw about 10 walkers, 2 fisherman, and just 3 of us on the water. Add to this great facilties, warm showers and board storage and it gets difficult to beat. Check the website for more details!

I have sailed there 4 times now

Very friendly group of people.

5 a day ticket

Clean and hot shower facility.

Would make a nice day out with the family , grassy banks near the club house and a cycle?walk path around the reservoir.

take care of your skeg at the edge nearest the club house, the reservoir is a flooded valley and there is the old flagstone road at this end.

Absolutely brilliant. Where I first saw someone windsurfing back in 1989 and knew I had to try it.

Beautiful place to sail.. feels like you are on top of the world.
