I'm surprised no-one has mentioned this place. It trumps all others on the reviews page for beaches.
It is huge and is one of the best locations for longboarding or windsurfing in the country. If you fancy some surfing with some guts then Croyde bay round the headland has the best beach break in Britain with hollow waves on low tide then if the conditions are right then try Putsborough around from there which blends into Woolacombe towards the North. Another huge beach whioch was used to practice the D-Day Landings in WWII. I challenge anyone to trump this for the best place to be (ignore the crowds). If surfing is your thing then a semi secret spot towards the south is an ideal reef breaking 2 ft bigger than elsewhere but I'd be lynched if I mentioned that here. But check a map!
