Lossie West Beach is a North facing beach on the beautiful Moray Firth. This beach work in Easterly
directions with big waves and Westerly directions in wind blown mush. The wave sailing can be spectular in an Easterly with 10ft waves fairly common, in a westerly it is similar to South coast mush. The unique quality of sailing in this part of the country is that it is quite common to see dolphins and seals sharing the waves with you.
The dangers are:
Rocks! loads of them, check out the beach at low tide.
Lobster pots, the local fishermen don't always mark the with buoys so there are long floating ropes on the surface. I've snapped a mast extension and ripped a harness hitting one of these at full speed.
Noise, the main runway approach of RAF Lossiemouth is over the bay, so low flying Tornado's are a regular occurance.
How to get there:
Lossiemouth is 40 miles east of Inverness on the A96. When in the village follow the signs to the West Beach. There is ample parking and toilet facilities. Last time I was there I had the beach to myself but you will occasionally see Ben, a kite surfer and part time windsurfer who has to get permission to launch from Air Traffic Controll, on the water.
When the conditions are right this place is paradise with white sands and azure blue water it could be tropical, apart from the temperature. If you are going up North on holiday, take your kit.
