Llan is a spot that you can sail any time. However its real advantage is in late spring through to l ate Autumn when the prevailing sw-w wind is forecast. It will be blowing force 2-3 at West Kirby, maybe a 3 at Rhosniegr, but a good 4 at Llan. Its all down to its location on the Menai Straights between Anglsey and the Mainland, the wind gets accelerated through the straights which are about 5 miles wide at this point. Llan is a flat water/bump and jump spot in a westerly direction, but can get onshore waves in a N through E direction. Mainly though people sail it in the sw-w direction. You can sail it any tide, but on Spring lows its a long walk to the waters edge and it is in fact possible to walk all the way to Puffin Island on the lowest Springs, so best go either side of low tide. Its faily safe, but there is quite a strong rip, say 3-4 kts left to right. Its very picturesque when your on the water and a great summertime sailing spot. If you're into wildlife, its common to see Seals and even Porpose have been spotted. Guilemots and Gannets are also commonly seen fishing for the sand eels in the banks under the shallow water.

Don't go to the little cafe as they don't brew the tea long enough, I'm not joking, the teabag wasn't in the cup for more than 30 seconds.

Works quite well in a NE, though the waves will have little to them, but then again its a sail in a NE. Try to avoid high springs as a shore break develops onto the shingle and eventually covers the beach leaving nowhere to launch or get back.

All in all, ok, but as Pegleg says, watch the current as it will take the wind out of your sail.

Given a F3 SW forecast at Rhosneigr, I would be there. Lived there for 2 years and any SW forecast was guaranteed 1-2 forces above the prediction due to the funneling of the Irish Sea and the acceleration around the headland on the left. I know were I would rather sail if I was in N Wales.

I stand corrected, you can't walk accross to Puffin Island on the lowest Spring tides!
