I was looking for somewhere to sail in a Easterly. Out with the map and into the van for a bit of an exploration. I was told about Llandudno, which is on the way to Rhosneiger. The beach is easy to find as all you do is follow signs to Llandudno on the A55 then follow signs to the dry ski slope. Once you get to the beach road turn right and follow the road for around 800m until the road widens. If you find yourself going up a steep hill you've gone too far!! If it is a NE then get as close to the cliff as you can without being in the lee(Less Shorebreak). There is no parking fee, rigging is on grass and there is a big sign saying 'All types of sailing welcome'. As i said before there is a bit of a shore break......around 5ft which isn't too bad. As the wind veers to E then SE you need to move further round toward the pier as there is a wind shadow. As you get closer to the pier the waves form a bit of shape to provide a bit of both backside and frontside riding. The only thing to watch is the tidal direction. On an ebb tide in an E it will be wind with tide so beware. It may be a bit of a hike but if you are gagging for a sail and the wind is from the East then this is the place to go. Either that or grab you mountain bike and head for Bets-y-coed to get your fix of adrenalin! Enjoy.

On the other side of the Llandudno peninsula, is Deganwy, I once went to Rhosneigr and all there was no wind, however, when driving back we saw windsurfers at Deganwy. It was completely onshore with a few onshore waves, but it was windy when nowhere else was. I think the wind direction was about South Westerly. This might have been a freak event or it could be welsh wind phenomenom, can anyone shed light on this?

Have been sailing there(Deganwy) for years!! and on a westerly it is allways Windy as i t funnells down the straits and hits the west shore.Best to launch from further up by the breaker as the shore dump can be a bit tricky and has been known to smash gear!! from there you get a clean run out and then BANG the wind picks you up!! May see you down there some time!!
