Top, but fickle, wave spot and a pain in the arse to get too. However a good day at this break will
leave you grinning from ear to ear for a couple of days!!!
Unlike the wind generated waves at Rhosneigr and Dinas, Hells Mouth picks up ground swells from the South Atlantic, consequently the waves are fast and powerfull. For side or cross off a SE-E wind is needed which is quire rare. Generally this happens when high pressure over the North Sea is blocking a low off off Southern Ireland/ Cornwall forcing the SE wind to fill in. when this happens you'll be greeted with anywhere between waist to logo high sets peeling in off the sanbars. The waves will be clean, glassy and long. Perfect for down the line sailing!
Best on a pushing tide. However as the water gets higher up the beach the low cliffs mess the wind up so it can be fickle getting through the shorebreak. The shorebreak takes no prisioners and you need to be competant to negotiate it through to the unbroken surf that awaits.
Take care to aviod the surfers, they'll appreciate your enjoyment of the waves but not if you get too close. One of the few wave spots in North Wales that gets the adrenalin flowing!! Stoked. See you there...
