This is a South facing beach 18 miles East of Plymouth. Works best in a Westerly but caters for all directions from NW to NE. Any SW direction generates large swell with mast high waves a common sight. The dangers to watch out for are a strong current generated by the River Avon that flows into the bay 500m down the beach so sail powered up. Burgh island is on the right as you look out to sea and causes a wind shadow at low tide in a westerly. There is a large carpark on the beach with a cafe and toilets, this costs 4.50 for a day and the car park attendant checks on a regular basis. All in all a superb place to sail, not as safe as Rhosneigr as it does close outwhen it gets big, but definitely a place to check out if you're down in Devon.

Having had the pleasure of sailing at Bigbury during a very windy autumn a few years back, as Iaino said above this place is similar to Rhossey but the waves are alot more powerful. Thus aloowing better wave riding but also higher chance of kit breakage. I destroyed a sail on a relatively small sail. On the plus side if their is no wind then their is good surfing to be had in Bigbury and at the other end of the bay at Banthem. Enjoy!!

You must have a very short mast if you get mast high waves there!! Good beach and even better pub on the island but watch out for the tractor driver who is generally ratarsed pissed. i understand the things capsized before!!

Check out Dave Ewers comment reference mast high waves at http://www.reactivewatersports.co.uk/ under the events tab. I think anonymous must have been unlucky with the conditions.

Sorry, forgot to mention that the web site above has still photos from the cafe above Bigbury beach renewed every half hour along with a full analysis of the weather conditions. Saves a wasted trip.
