To get there: A35 from Southampton. At end of A35 turn left on to A337. Turn right at the next roun dabout and follow this road through the industrial estate into a residential area then look for the brown beach sign on a sharp right bend. The car park is privately run and you pay til the end of the day (about a fiver) and get a refund if you leave early. All the car park wardens I've met are very windsurfer friendly and worth being nice to. The cafe at the far end of the car park is excellent and licenced but can get a bit busy in the summer months. This is not usually a problem as good sailing weather is not really mainstream beach weather but on busy days rigging space can be a bit cramped. The beach can be sailed without too much carrying at all states of tide and has the boating channel for Christchurch Harbour running across about 50m off shore which does a good job of taking the sting out of any shore dump. The best wind to sail in is SW but S, SE and E can also work but will be choppier. If there's a swell running up the English Channel some of it will wrap around Hengistbury Head and come in at 90 degrees to a SW to create some very nice ramps. On flatter days the sand bars closer in can sometimes be interesting. Other than that the beach is a good launch spot for just chilling out by hooking into a big sail and board and heading out to sea for as long as you dare. (does anybody else do that ?) There's a good windsurf shop (Spot On Water) a couple of hundred metres back up the road to Christchurch.
