In the northern end of the island of Fuerteventura is the port and holiday resort of Corralejo. W

Another logohilst the nearby Flag beach (a couple of miles south down the coast), offers excellent kite surfing and wind surfing amongst spectacular sand dunes – my own personal favourite is the smaller spot on the edge of Corralejo harbour. This spot is known as ‘Galera Beach’ or ‘Waikiki Beach’, named after the Waikiki bar located overlooking the spot (an excellent place for non windsurfing loved ones to chill whilst you enjoy sailing). There is a wooden rigging area and a concrete ramp to take you to the water at any state of tide. Prevailing wind conditions mean that the wind will mostly be cross or cross on from the left (N or NE winds) and the harbour wall to the left shelters the launching point from the waves so you are launching in to flat water (unlike Flag beach which has quite a nasty shore dump). If it’s really too windy you can stay in the relatively flat water inside the harbour but the real fun begins when you venture beyond the harbour wall. Outside the harbour the wind freshens a notch or two and in winter there is often a wonderful rolling swell of 1 to 3 metres. As long as it is cross shore, it is possible to sail out to Lobos island a mile or so away and gybe in crystal turquoise waters before the trip back. To the right on the way out is a shallower area where some big waves break so novices should always keep to the left generally this means keeping up wind where there are swells but no breaking waves. Adjacent to the Waikiki bar is the Ventura Surf hire shop where Mistral and Gaastra wind surfing kit can be hired for 3 hours for 30 euro. In my opinion this is one of the easiest and best spots on the island to sail, and the hire shop means that it’s hardly worth taking your own gear. I may have been lucky with the wind but for the last 3 years I have gone in early November and always sailed for at least 3 of the 5 days. ramp with unusual onshore wind
