If you are new to the site and wondering what it's all about there's an introduction here - I try to keep the front page free for displaying latest additions to our various sections. In short this website is an online community or portal aimed primarily at UK windsurfers offering discussion forums, classified adverts, picture gallery, sailors logs, web links and occasional news stories (They're a bit like buses  ). This is no soap box and we are not selling anything (although you can buy a T-Shirt) so get stuck in. |

Fancy a trip to Hawaii, but want to sail port tack and avoid the crowds?? Then check out Diamond Hea
d , named after the famous extent volcano that is the backdrop to the the break. Diamond Head beach itself is a couple of miles upwind from Waikiki beach in Honolulu. The trades blow about 15kt side/side onshore fom the left. Waves come uninterupted from storms in the South Pacific or Antartic, so are usually fairly small but occaisionally can get logo/mast high. When this happens in summer you find a small contingent of pros fly over from Maui (generally flat in summer) to join in the fun!! You'll be rippin it up with Josh Stone and the boys, not something we experience everyday at home!!!!
Best time of year in June through September. However July & August are busiest with many Italian sailors flying in to take their summer break. Do respect the locals and the surfers, they'll appreciate and it'll make your trip more enjoyable. You'll soon realise who the locals are because the wave is very sectioned and the locals know the peaks inside out and make it look easy. Take a medium/floaty wave board 5.5m and 5.0m sails dependant upon your weight and ability.
The waves peak up on a uneven rock ledge and coral heads, which can become exposed especially downwind, so do be carefull. The other hassle is lugging your kit from the road, down to the break. its about a 300m walk down a sealed footway, ok going down, but coming back up is a real pain, especially when your knackered after a good day! There's a few other places to sail on the Honolulu side, but you'll have to work those out for yourself!!
Most days the temperature is about 85F, and the water is warm enough not to need a wetty, infact leave it at home, just take boardies and a rash vest. On the water , the ocean is clear and blue, the sky peppered with fluffy white clouds and the sun shines on the beautiful coastline and lush green mountains behind Honolulu....perfect. Do watch out for the odd turtle, they'll bob up from time to time!
Theres loads to do in Oahu, take a surf lesson, go see the big wave spots of Pipeline, Wiamea Bay, Sunset etc, which are flat in summer! Pearl Harbour. Do take time out to visit Chinatown and its market area.
You can get accomodation easily on the Island. A B&B for 2 on the windward side in Kialua is about 60-80 per night in a private house. Its quiter and cooler on the windward side and there are some beautiful beaches. Some of the cheaper hotels in Honolulu are 45 for two. Get a Lonley Planet for more info. Unless you're staying for a long spell, hiring a car is quite cheap, Hertz are only slightly more expensive than the small number of local budget operators, but have the added advantage of being next to the airport and the cars are low mileage and in good condition. They'll also change it for you in case of any problems.
You can hire/buy surfboards in all the main places, there's litterally loads of places on Waikiki. You can hire windsurf kit fom Naish in Kialua. You'll also see loads of Robbie's old kit on the cieling and walls.
