Waterstart 13 Years, 11 Months ago Karma: 0
Hi

What is the lowest wind that a 13 stone (not particularly able) guy can expect to waterstart. And what size sail would it take?

Cheers
Ed

For me at about the same wieght I generaly work on the principal that if there is enough wind to get planing then there is enough to water start (and vice versa). So with the largest sail that I own being 8m the lowest wind speed I can waterstart in is about 10 or 11 knots.

wow - thats not much wind!
I would say the better you are the less wind you need so maybe to start with you'll need a decent force 4/5 i.e. at least 16 knots of wind.
Sail size can start to work against you - as they get bigger they get heavier, also some hold water in the luff tube etc. Last time I used a big sail (7m +) was a few years ago on holiday and it was a pig to maneuver in the water.

Do we assume you are asking as you are trying/want to learn?

If so I would suggest you make sure there's enough wind to plane then use that sail...
