Alvor Bay in the Algarve, Portugal.

Nestled in-between Praya de Rocha and Alberfeira, Alvor is a fabulous holiday destination if you do not like over developed touristy places!

Alvor bay consists of a huge bay with a lagoon area which splits the bay in two. The lagoon is very popular with kite surfers but I didn't see anyone windsurfing there (access is an issue).

The bay is popular with the local windsurfers and conditions are typically cross offshore with flat water and chop. You do need to be confident sailing in open sea as the tide can be quite strong. As I found out, hiring kit in Alvor is pretty much a non starter but if you take your own kit you'd love it as a location. Definately need a wetsuit as the water is far from warm here!  Portugese competitions are held in the bay so that tells you something about the location. Access to the beach is good with a number of close car parks, beach bars and facilities. On the other side of the bay is a place called Lagos. Close to Lagos is a windsurfing hire centre called Windsurf Point. It is on the beach at Meia Praia and hires all good windsurf kit including harnesses etc. Conditions here are the same as Alvor, but with the added benefit of safety and ready rigged kit. There is also a shop run by the same people close by. Recommend the location for a great family holiday.
