Back from Porto Heli!!! 5 Years, 5 Months ago Karma: 0
Thought I'd let everyone know how it all went (if you were wondering)

Good if you are a beginner. I heeded WJ's warning of little wind and opted for a dinghy RYA qualification with the odd w-surf if it got blowy. I am a late stage beginner (planing and just about footstraps with difficulty but able to waterstart). Went with Neilson and have to say that all steps of organisation couldn't be faulted, everyone was really cool, friendly and knew what they were about.

The main pain in the arse is that there is a four hour transfer to the place from Athens airport but I slept through most of it. I'd get the hydrofoil if poss.

Poro Heli is a natural harbour about a mile or so in diameter which could almost be a lake, surrounded by hills. It is served by neilsons holtel which had a range of new Tushingham Thunderbird/Storm sails and a few different boards, nothing too radical.

Wind was a bit gusty all week at force 2-3 gusting to 4-5. I planed about 5 or 6 times only (bearing in mind that I only w-surfed on and off when not on the dinghy course) however didn't see many other people out there planing either. The wind was also swinging around by 90-180 degrees quite regularly making things difficult. I was informed that the windshifts were unusual but the wind strength was actually a bit stronger than normal so I guess this is not somewhere to go if you are looking to improve any planing/jumping/carve gybing skills.

Generally food was good, socially good and good for mountain biking as well. Staff were all cool and ready to help and give advice and I would say that this would be a great place to recommend to anyone who wants to learn to windsurf from scratch but as far as after this is concerned than I'd probably try Vas (only form hearsay as I've never been).

Hope this is helpfull to someone out there!!

Mind you after being there for a week I went for a sail on the marine lake yesterday and felt like I was windsurfing around someones toilet bowl, It stinks!!!! It's good for encouraging you not to fall in.

Cheers
