I've been thinking along these lines this year as I live within walking distance of the beach. The solution I have come up with is a bit cumbersome but will be trialed next year when I have finished the contract I am working on.

I have a small trailer and have seen these manual devices for moving caravan's about. Basically an additional set of wheels with a lever to get mechanical advantage and lift the trailor. I will pull this too and from the beach with the advantage the trailor could be hitched up to my van if wanting to go further. My gear could stay on the trailor and be ready to go at anytime.

I'm at work at the moment but tonight I'll find some pics of said device. You can also get 12v powered versions but that is a bit well....
