Starboard formula wood Repair progress. 12 Months ago Karma: 0
If you have read my post about the bungled board repair then this is the follow up where I attempt my first ever repair.

Read on down and see how far I have got with the advice given on this forum and by members through PM's.

My _object_ive with these repairs is to get it back on the water for September and if the repairs don't hold do it again over winter. Therefore I haven't gone for perfection.

I'm doing two repairs to the board. Firstly repair to the rail damage I inflicted on the board and secondly a crack on the deck that was my first real idea there was a hollow hidden under the deck.

These images show the original damage cut away

Rail.

Deck.

The hole in the deck seemed to stretch down about 10cm and reached into corners I couldn't see or feel. I had to either cut more out and run the risk of having to repair where the fin box is or trying to blind fill the gaps. As I want to get it on the water asap I went for the bodge. I broke down EPS sheets into beads and pressed _layer_s into the holes. The top most _layer_ was mixed with epoxy and pressed into place and a final _layer_ was brushed over and left to go hard.

Deck filled with eps.

I left this for a few days and then glassed in the remainder with clothe.
Glassed repair with excess cut back and sanded. A final _layer_ of epoxy to level the dip in the middle was added. There is still a dip but as I am not sure this would work I didn't think it was worth spending precious time getting it super flat.
Final Stage sanded and ready for painting.

The rail repair.
_layer_ed up with clothe & Epoxy then sanded back

This was sanded back and a final _layer_ of epoxy brushed on and sanded.

I've started re varnishing the bottom of the board.
First coat.

Improvements can be made to all I have done but I want to see if they stay there when in use before I do more.

Cheers

Dan

Cheers Shaun for the comment, if you were local mate I'd happily help you out. I have really enjoyed doing it and if it holds I'll be well pleased and will tidy it up a bit more just to see if I can do it.

I've tried to not make the repair harder and less flexible than that it is bonded too but we'll just have to see. Another coat of varnish this afternoon, one more tomorrow then maybe in the evening I'll get it waterborne.

I agree it looks good and took a brave man to hack into your board. If it holds ok and you want to go for the cosmetic stage I recommend getting an airbrush and Starboard paint from Blue Chip.

I dinged my carve, filled it, got it perfectly smooth and resprayed it with about 6 thin coats. I then blended it with a bit of T cut and the match was perfect.

Not sure how you'd do the wood laminate. How about taking some matches and a scalpel and sticking very thin slivers to the deck. I'm sure that would look great!

Let us know how it holds up!

Hi Dave, cheers for the advice on painting. Having got a bit more intimate with the board than you generally do you seem to find so many imperfections that to be honest I don't think I am going to bother with matching it all in. I'm liking the battle scared look. Or shall I say it is customised?
Moded like a really rough Saxo or fiesta, bits of filler, fibreglass and not a decent paint match for miles.

As for the laminate it could be done like this Boardlady doing veneer repair but again looks like alot of work and won't function any better.

cheers,

Dan

Wow that Boardlady does amazing repairs. I've just spent 30 mins browsing. There's nothing she can't fix! Shame she's in the states! It's quite fun tyring to find the worst damage and seeing how good she gets it! There must a be a Discovery Channel programme in there somewhere.
