Hi everybody! (My first post)

I just purchased my first board, a Bic Astro Rock - 285 cm, 125 l.

I sail inland (midlands) in light winds so I use a 8.1m neil pryde supersonic sail.

The fin's a bit knackered and I was thinking about buying a new one, but which one!?

I was thinking something along lines of 30-40cm, but really don't have much of a clue.

Any advice welcome.

Cheers!

Crayons.

Hi Crayons,

I'm sure some others might add some advice but mine would be 'big' for an 8.1m - say 40cm, but this is about as big as you want to get on an Astro rock ? some of the more modern wide short boards take even bigger fins but I'm not sure about the Bic Astro (Any ideas anyone).

On the other hand if this is to be your only fin I would go smaller as this would be way too big in stronger winds with smaller sails.

Personally I think the ideal situation is to have almost matching fins and sails so you change fin when you change sail (bigger sail requires more lateral resistance and vice versa). Occaisionally you can change fins to save changing sail (small increase in wind strength, change to smaller fin).

my two pence anyway....

Bert

You may have to be careful with a big fin in an Astro rock as they have a std US box I seem to remember - so are not designed for the pressures of todays larger fins.

I would go for a 32/34 which is probably a good compromise.

i had an astro rock. What great memories!!

only had two sails 5.5 and a 6.5 (weigh 11 stone) and only one fin 32 with a window. apparently better for carving - but i wasn't that good to know the difference. Any way the fin always semed good enough for me.

Not really advice but hope my experience is useful for you

Ok thanks guys, thats helpful.

One more question, does the fin length include the attachment head, or just the length of the bit which actually protrudes from the board?

by the way the current fin is a trim box so i guess i'll b sticking with that standard.
