I saw 4 kitesurfers out at New Brighton today in the easterly winds. As the water was super flat, they where getting some very good speeds. They where about 500m out from the road, between the boating lake and the Harrison drive end. The tide was out and they where using water trapped between sand bars. The spot looked as if it might be good for a north a south winds with a 600/700 meter run. It might be to shallow for windsurfers. Could this be a potential "Sandy point" ???? Any one tried this spot?

That was me and my friends.

The wind is super gusty in an Easterly.

The channel is dangerous for windsurfers, as the tide goes out,you get multiple sandbars that start appearing on the Northern side very quickly. Alright when your fins are only 5cm long, not too good for the bigger fins on a windsurfer.

Check it out when the tide is right out and you'll see what I mean.

Hi Dave
Thought it might be shallow, looked good for kitesurfers on easterly days.

Cheers

If your desperate to get out in an Easterly and cant be ar**d , sorry , bothered goin the East coast.A lot of kiters are goin to Fleetwood on a low tide .
There's a channel that runs North to south about a mile long and a few hundred yards wide that the ferry comes in and goes out.

Great for speed runs ,lots of Windsurfers and Kiters there and relatively safe because you can land on the sand banks either side of the channel and the ferry gives a great wave to launch off.

thanks for the tip darkside, went up there today (fleetwood) on a bit of a whim - had a cracking days windsurfing, 25 + kts NE giving a reach to die for of over 1/2 mile up the channel and blazing sunsine !. 5 hrs sailing, alot of the time over powered on a 6.4m, after 2 mths of nothing, and i'm stuggling to type this...but still smiling. Cheers to Ian and RCUT for the local knowledge. Will definately sail there again.

I went to Fleetwood with Mat yesterday (Mats second day on the run!)and had a great time ripping up and down the channel on a 5.0... Great venue in an Easterly.

Many thanks to the 2 chaps (who's names temporarily escape me, sorry) who were kind enough to lend me their deck plates after I arrived without my kit bag, like a true muppet....
