Clinics 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 18
I would like to improve my turning round ability.
My gybing will get me round most of the time when I am out but I would like to be able to tack as well (94lt and 70ltr boards) plus heli tack and duck gybe.
So has anyone any recomedations for a good clinic ; Peter Hart, Guy Cribb, Jem Hall, Simon Bornhoff.

Ken

Can recommend Jem "bender" Hall. He gets you back to basics and you'll find you have to unravel all your bad habits (if you have any!?) and this really makes you learn. It can be a painful experience at first to let go of bad habits but longer term it really does help. For example a spock is a vulcan finished off with a helitack whilst still slidng back, Jem will make you learn helitacks properly before trying to teach a spock. Rhodes clinic in June is good as its Bf4-5 every day and flat water. Most people on the clinics are everyday folk with a passion for sailing and its a good laugh.

I've seen Jem get people from not being able to duck gybe to doing them in a couple of days.

Add Jim Collis to your list Ken. I did the 'Boards mag crap gybers' course with Jim in El Tur a couple of months ago. He's a human dynamo, great coach and has a great sense of fun. Everyone came home having achieved more than they'd hoped for and having had a cracking laugh too.

I'm even thinking of going on his "how to manoeuvre your van a bit more carefully" course, should he run one

Hehe - Ken - Jibing on the monster waves at Rhossy, and @ 45kts at west kirby kinda puts you in the 'advanced cornering club' already!!!

The only clinic I have experienced was Jem @ Prasonisi in Rhodes - its ideal for learning exactly the kind of stuff you are after and helped my helitacks immenseley, with the added bonus that when you fancy a break from cornering, you can let loose in the sizeable waves just over the spit (very similar to Rhossy, but warmer and bluer).... I'd certainly go again.

Hi Ken,

Was watching Harty this weekend teaching a tacking clinic and it was brilliant. He really breaks it down and you come away with a really clear picture on what you should be doing. He's been doing it for years now, and still is as motivated as ever. I'm sure the rest of the guys are all good, too, and having read Jems articles and spent a weekend away with him on a stag weekend, reckon he's pretty on it too, as well as being somebody who gives it 200% effort all the time. Focus, Believe and Enjoy as Jem says...

Ken

if you're already in the advanced cornering club, so Shawn tells us, you'd probably be able to save some cash and work it out yourself.

I wouldn't claim to be particularly advanced, but managed to crack duck gybes at west kirby in a day on big gear and am gettting pretty consistent with my 98 and 85l boards in upto a 6/7. They don't look that stylish, but i plane out of quite a few, and i'll probably never look stylish in what ever i do anyway. Carve gybes have improved as a result too.

Heli-tacks are a little more difficult in anything 5 and above for me, and tacking - perhaps a clinic would help. A bit heavy footed myself.

Later
