O.K. sounds like early days so don't get too paranoid about gybing.
Footstraps, harness, waterstarting and good ealy planing technique are much more important. Practice all of these first because if your not planing then you can't carve.
Then every time your out sailing study how the proficient sailors gybe. Try and copy them. Ask them questions if your stuck on anything. If possible go on a clinic for gybing. Plenty of DVD's about as well and some web sites e.g.(http://www.geocities.com/txccwa/wintips.html
