Buying my first set-up 5 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
I have started windsurfing and i am ready to buy my first set-up, someone suggested that i bought a board approx 140-150L, how do i know which is best? I am just over 6ft tall and weigh between 14-15st depending on training?

Have also been told that i need a 6.5 metre sail?

Any other suggestions?

Hi matb23,
I am about your size 6'1" and 94 Kg and think that any modern wide board of 140 to 150 litres would be fine as long as you have mastered the basics, don't be tempted to buy an old long narrow board no matter how cheap!!
Its also important to inspect the board before you pay so its best to collect it yourself as carriers often dammage boards in transit
As for sails it will depend on the wind strength what size you need, a 150L board will handle most sail sizes from 5.0 up to 9.5sqm
Have a look on the poole harbour website as they have a sail/board size calculator you can download
Where abouts are you in the UK?
Good sailing,
Steve

What size windsurfing board and/or windsurf sail you get as your first setup depends on a few factors:
1. How much windsurfing you have done
2. How often you are intending on windsurfing once you have the equipment
3. If you have had/are going to have any tuition
4. How quickly you tend to progress / natural flare for windsurfing

Here at the Poole Windsurfing School, we sell on our last seasons kit to make way for brand new equipment each year. Currently we still have an RRD Evolution 180lt windsurf board that is great for the basics & moving onto learning faster tacks/gybes, beachstarts, harness, planing and even footstraps.

You do need to be careful not to go too small in volume with your first board, else it will slow your progress.

Our second hand equipment list can be found here:

Happy Windsurfing!
