Rigging cammed sails Help needed 8 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
Anyone got any advice on rigging cammed sails?
I have a 10.4 gastra nitro with 5 cams and its a B-stard to rig I have tried keeping the cams on the mast whilst rigging but they always come off when I downhaul it. The other thing I have tried is out hauling it to death then trying to pop the cams on to the mast, works ok with the top cams but not the lower ones.

Any help greatfuly recieved

Steve

I've bought 2nd hand cammed sails not knowing the difference with 'normal' sails, then learning they are meant to be harder to rig, only to discover they're as easy to rig as normal sails. I just fit the cams as i slide the mast up and no problem!

I must admit i havn't got a big sail like yours but i don't know if size of sail would make a whole lot of difference.

Hi Marmite
What mast are you using? If your not using a Gaastra mast, the cams may keep popping off. I used to have a Nitro2 10.4 and 10.9 and used a Tushingham 550 mast. I had to sand the edges on each cam so it sat on the mast correctly. If take a cam out of the luff tube and put it on your mast, you will see if it fits or not. One you'v cracked the rigging thing, it will be nearly as easy as a rotational sail. If you sail at WK, next time your out. I can show you how to trim/tune your cams.

Cheers

Thanks Mark
Will have a look at the cams, they seem to have rollers in them
The mast is a 520 Neil Pryde 100% with a 32cm carbon extension. Once its rigged its a great light wind sail. There aren't any zips in the luff tube to get to the cams so I don't see how to get them out?
Gopher Thanks for the Info
Cheers

The bottom cam can be removed near the tack pulley. 2nd & 3rd can be accessed through the boom cut-out. And the remaining two our a bit of a night mare, but do-able. The Nitros were designed around the old Fibrespar masts, at around boom hight, these were slightly narrower than the NP's. It does sound like sanding the cams will do the trick
It is possible to pop the cams on, but it will be difficult with the NP mast and the narrow luff tube.

Cheers
