Tiree advice pls 3 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 14
I'm planning to head for Tiree for a couple of weeks sometime around september. Can anyone advise on:

a) Getting there
&
b) Anywhere/ areas of note to stay, and any particularly good accomodation.

Cheers

Shawn

Getting there. Well assuming you're taking kit, that means the Calmac ferry, which sails from Oban and takes about four hours. Not as bad as it sounds as it's a very scenic journey, usually with a big fry-up involved. Depending on the ferry time, you might want to break the journey and overnight in Oban itself, which is quite a pleasant little town.

Accomodation depends on how many of you are going and what you're looking for I guess. The normal option is to rent a cottage. Many are windsurfer friendly, but there are apparently some who have had bad experiences in the past. The island is small and you'll be driving to the sailing spots wherever you stay, so the main locational consideration will be whether you need to stay near the pub or not.

Willy Angus at Wild Diamond would be good for advice on where to stay. He runs windsurfing on the island and is also a 'true' islander, so knows what's what. He runs a camp site too.

Oh, and if there's a group of you going, have a look at this place:

I've stayed their twice in the self catering bit and it could hardly have been better suited.

Well one more top tip would be to book at least one meal in here

They deserve a plug as I had a very good meal there with some friends I was staying with at the time. I was mldly surprised when I (mis)heard them tell me were were going to the 'gay bar' that evening though (that seemed a bit forward for Tiree). The couple that run the place are really nice people too, even if they do engage in unnatural practices involving string (which I see you are also dabbling with).

Slim should be able to give you some good Mr & Mrs tips (does he still tune in here now he's a southern wuss?) as he holidayed there too.
